Stigma surrounding substance use and mental health conditions continues to prevent many people from seeking the care they need. Individuals may face judgment, misunderstanding, or unfair treatment—sometimes even within healthcare settings—leading to shame and isolation rather than support. All West Virginians have a role to play in challenging these perceptions, reducing stigma, and creating a culture that encourages understanding, compassion, and access to care for everyone. Treatment works and recovery is possible!
